Great Depression II was officially launched on September 20, 2008, just a few days after Black Tuesday, though it was another six months before the project really came together. The February 2009 upgrade is complemented by a Google knol, similarly titled Great Depression II / The Second Great Depression.
Great Depression II is one of several political websites associated with the website Invisible Republic. However, it resembles the website Politix in that it’s more family friendly than my other political sites. Visitors will encounter the term media whore occasionally, but the site is generally pretty free of obscenities or what some might call political trash talk. Nevertheless, the site is recommended primarily for mature adults and young adults.
This site offers a holistic analysis of a crisis of which economic problems are but a part. Environmental problems, corporate corruption, fascism, World War III - all are discussed here.
Though Great Depression II is biased and opinionated, it is based on facts and logic. Moreover, the site discusses a variety of opinions while inviting visitors to share their ideas via associated blogs, forums and polls. To get a good overview, I recommend you read about the WebRanger (me), then read the article Naming the Beast.
An Interactive Site
This is currently the most interactive of the more than one dozen Geobop websites, with several associated blogs, forums and polls. A WordPress blog is featured in the Talk section, with a Google blog at http://blog.great-depression2.com.
This project is an experiment in progress, and I haven’t yet figured out exactly how the two blogs will interact with the website in general. Tentatively, the Talk section will serve as a news commentary, with feedback allowed. Material from this section will be adapted to articles featured in other sections (especially Topics).
The Google blog will be primarily used for more important breaking news items and announcements related to the website itself.
For example, if massive economy-related protests and riots broke out in Russia, I might report it in the Talk section. If the Russian government collapsed three months later, that would inspire another blog entry in the Talk section. I might then glean material from both blog entries and merge them into a report at www.great-depression2.com/World/Russia. I would then announce the new article via the Google blog. People who want to comment on the full article/report could do so via the Google blog entry, which would probably be located at http://blog.great-depression2.com/Russia.
But this is all tentative; the project could evolve in unforeseen directions.
A Popular Site
This website and the associated knol both ranked high in Google long before they were properly developed. Since the economy will likely remain the #1 political issue for the next few years at least, Great Depression II will probably become Geobop’s most popular political site.
It is my hope that I can use this site to both educate people and generate interest in various related issues, like America’s invisible education crisis. Believe it or not, solving our economic problems may begin with fixing your local school board.
